Preparing For Endoscopic Esophageal Dilation
Preparing for this procedure will require a discussion with your doctor about the medications you are taking. Anesthesia is used when this procedure is performed.
- You will want someone to drive you home. You should not drive for 24 hours afterward.
- Don’t eat for 12 hours prior to your appointment.
- Stop taking medications prior to the procedure as per your doctor’s instructions.
- Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 12 hours afterward.
The problems that can occur when this procedure is performed are rare, but like any procedure there are risks. These include bleeding and esophageal damage, painful swallowing and infection. There are factors that increase the risk of complications such as alcoholism, smoking, heart or lung problems and age.
